Description:
This is an unbelievable find that has been sitting hidden away under my nose for years. I found this most likely never fired gun tucked away in its original box in the back of my father’s gun safe. Since I am quite familiar with all the other guns there, this piece might have been lurking, untouched, for twenty years or more. Since he passed five years ago without mentioning it or showing it to me, I will never know how it came to him.

Here’s what I do know: The Model 13 was introduced in 1974, with the Series 1 being manufactured through 1976. There is a receipt in the box: $189.95+5.50= 195.45. On the back is a handwritten note in the box saying: Purchased Sept – 13 – 1975, suggesting it was made in ‘74 or ‘75. The handwriting looks to be my father’s, but I can’t say for sure. The gun, including the bore, is in mint condition. Though I am not expert enough to say it has never been fired, I can see nothing but shiny and spotless in the bore. The only thing I can see that is not new and perfect is a faint abrasion on the top of the barrel about an inch behind the front site. It appears not to be from wear after manufacture, but a slight irregularity that might have been partly covered by the nickel-plating. It can been seen, just barely, in the photo of the barrel from above.

This is what some call a “P&R,” or “pinned and recessed,” Smith & Wesson. Though serious collectors will already know about this, here is what I can tell those not in the know: Where the top of the frame meets the top rear of the barrel, a steel “pin” has been placed; it intersects with a notch in the barrel, anchoring it in place. The “recess” refers to the counterbore feature at the rear of each chamber, which allows the rim of the cartridge to be seated within a circle of steel. These features, clearly visible in the photos, were considered necessary enhancements to safely encase magnum loads; they were, however discontinued in 1982.

The serial number, D786447, matches the SN on the box. I found the gun wrapped in the S&W waxed paper that is familiar to S&W enthusiasts. Its cleaning kit and screwdriver, still sealed in its clear plastic bag, were there, too, as were the Warranty Registration Card, and the four-page “Parts List – Instructions for Use – Maintenance – Specifications – Guarantee” foldout. Also in the box, and included with purchase, I found flyers for compatible S&W holsters, S&W Authorized Service Centers, and a S&W knives brochure. Unlike the gun and other items, the box itself has some wear.

Though most of the Model 13-1s were blued, the other details of the piece are, I believe, within the norm for a Model 13-1. Like the blued guns, the nickel plating is glossy everywhere except along the top of the barrel and frame, where a matte finish is found along the line of sight. The grips are deeply checkered walnut. Case hardening on the hammer and trigger shows brilliant blue and purple. The action is single and double, and the cylinder holds the expected six rounds, handing both .357 magnums and the more shooter-friendly .38 special loads.

I don’t know how often a piece like this shows up as if new-in-box forty-two years later, but the only way I think I’ll ever see another is if could go back in time to my local gun shop in 1975. I hate to part with it, but I must, as my mother’s Alzheimer’s care demands it.
