GOREGEOUS & RARE Metropolitan Arms POLICE Revolver

Colt 1862 Police Look-a-like Fewer Than 3,000 Made

Here we present an antique Metropolitan Arms Police Revolver, made circa 1865, in New York City. Colt was one of the primary recipients for small arms contracts during the American Civil War, mostly selling many tens of thousands of their 1860 Army and 1851 Navy models. The company was also still producing lines of civilian arms to meet the demands of the home front and those soldiers wanting to privately purchase their own side arms. During the war, Colt introduced a new line for the civilian and law enforcement market, the 1862 Police Revolver. Many collectors today view these as the climax of the development of the percussion revolver with its size, firepower and aesthetic.

Metropolitan Arms Co. began making a near copy of the 1862 in 1864, the year much of the Colt factory burned to the ground. Very few were made, only about 2,750 by Flayderman’s estimate, between 1864-1866, when the Colt factory was up and running again. Was there a connection between these dates of manufacture? Or was Metropolitan Arms Co.’s production simply stymied by the end of the Civil War?

This specimen does feature the Metropolitan Arms Co. barrel marking, one of only 1,600 to bear these markings. Some of production was completely unmarked, while others were marked for the Union Arms Company. While also made in 4-1/2 and 5-1/2 inch barrel lengths, this barrel is 6-1/2 inches in length.

This specimen is in fine condition, and it has been refreshed. The metal surfaces are very smooth, with the loading lever, hammer and frame being beautifully case-hardened. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The walnut grips show use, but are in fine condition. The bore is shiny, with sharp rifling. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .36 percussion
