Description:
A Cased 16-Bore D.B. Flintlock Sporting Gun by John Manton, London, Serial No. 2696, Circa 1796 Beautiful damascus 34"/85cm barrels signed with maker's name "MANTON - LONDON" in gold on the sunken rib with silver foresight. London proof marks. Case-hardened patent breeches each with two engraved gold lines and gold-lined touch-hole, grooved tang finely engraved with scrolls, flowers, and foliage, signed flat beveled locks each with stepped tail, blued steel-spring, roller bearing on a ramp, and gold-lined semi-rainproof pan, the internal working parts retaining much of their original blue.  Nicely figured walnut half-stock, chequered grip, raised cheek-piece, finely engraved iron mounts including scroll trigger-guard, the tang of the butt-plate with a dog and bird, trigger-plate with large pineapple finial, silver escutcheon engraved with owner's initial 'A', a star and crescent above, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, and brass-mounted ramrod. Cased in associated re-lined and refitted mahogany case with some accessories, the exterior of the lid with large circular escutcheon incorporating the flush-fitting carrying handle. Accessories include double sided single charge brass powder flask and pigskin flint roll-up pouch.

A fine early game gun by a foremost maker.

Condition:
Gun is in overall remarkably very good condition. Barrels retain nearly all of their London quality re-brown. Stock finish is very good and forend has minor professional repair along top left edge (almost indiscernible) .
