Description:
Very large Georgia Confederate D-Guard, 24" blade ? 1 1/2 wide blade, with original copper and brass trimmed scabbard.
d -guard itself is custom brass made from furnishings and misc parts in the period, custom marde guard believed to mirror georgia capital dome as seen on beltplates from Ga. The rt side of the blade is marked with a 1" high letter "G". The outside of the guard has in very old silver paint the owners initials or GA in script very hard to tell which it is- the blade exhibits great age and patina as does the whole piece the handle and guard although well made shows the age and piecemail in parts and workmanship. Thw wod handle has a varnish outer and has a fill length crack stil solid but shows maturity- The scabbard is wood-willow oak fond in 5 southern states and was commonly used to make scabbards, the upper part is thin copper sheeting with small copper rivets, the age is that of an old penny quite wonderful the belt connection is missing probably because of the weight and battle stresses, the tip of the scabbard is a well aged drag made of copper from a battle field pickup no doubt- the wood was inscribed in script--S. AMOS CO.A-18TH Ga the script is under the black paint which is original and very old by the cracking and crazing present- I believe the rig was made in late 1863 to mid 1864. I as well as the last 3 owners have 50 years experience each in collecting- This piece was found in middle georgia 40 yrs ago sold by the original purchaser and it disappeared till  few yrs ago when the original buyer /collector got a call from a fellow collector saying he wished to sell his collection of southern artifacts he agreed to come view them upon arrival there up on the wall was this d-guard he found 40 yrs ago and was brought up to date on how it landed in this collection-The person bought the collection wanting the swords primarily and sold the d-guard to me. The names and contact will be supplied to the buyer upon request.
The knifes original owner i located in company B  of the 18th--not unusual for soldiers to e moved around to fill unmaned positions due to illness, desertion or battle wounds or death- confederate records are flimsy at best all us collectors know this- I have other othe fine bowie i'll be selling, a triple-d-guard and a large fighting knife from va in wonderful scabbard- large bowies are rare and desireable, original scabbards of any type add to the value sometimes 50 percent and id of the owners double the value from there usually--This is a totally honest piece --i can send more pics to interested buyers and can answer any questions you may have-if interested in others contact me as well- this is not phoney pseudo confederate junk this is a fine Civil War Georgia collectable. the pricing is well below what i feel the big boys would ask for such a piece on their table.
