This is a very fine example of an original Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that was manufactured in 1887. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch model marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight marked "R" on the upper right-hand corner. The rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a one-piece stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands both marked with a "U", slotted button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked butt plate without compartment. "SWP/1887" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" and small stamped "W" on the underside behind the trigger guard. Complete with a brown leather sling. BBL: 32 5/8 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-70 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 383XXX Condition: Very fine. The barrel, lock and hammer retain 90% original blue finish with some areas fading to a smooth plum patina. The breechblock and upper tang retain 95% original case colors. The stock is also very fine with a dark area on the right rear of the buttstock and overall some scattered minor dings and dents, with crisp cartouche. The markings are crisp and clear.
