Description: Winchester 1886 Deluxe Rifle - ANTIQUE PHOTO DOCUMENTED FACTORY .45-90, 95% FACTORY COLORS General Specs: Winchester, Year 1892 Antique, .45-90, 8lbs 11oz, Lever Action Rifle Serial Number: sn73210 You will note that the rifle shipped in 1892 in caliber .40-65. Looking at the factory letter, the third line from the bottom tells us that the rifle was returned to the factory for a work order #31972 in July of 1899. Unfortunately, Cody Firearms museum does not have info on this work order. Please examine the photos showing the stampings on the underside of the barrel. It is clearly evident the original barrel was re-bored and chambered by the factory to the more desirable .45-90 caliber. You will note the employee initials near the new caliber stampings, and the assembly number “428” on the barrel, the lower tang of the receiver, and under the top tang on the butt stock documenting these as factory original parts of gun no. 73210. According to LeRoy Merz, the barrels only got an assembly number if they were returned to the factory for work. He has stated to me that he is certain the gun was rechambered and re-bored at the factory, and maybe even restored at that time. These photos document that the barrel was rechambered at the factory, likely in 1899. Everything still matches the letter…barrel configuration, magazine, etc. Here we have a special order 1886 Deluxe rifle factory chambered in .45-90 caliber, complete with Cody letter documenting the special-order features. What a gorgeous, untouched, high factory condition Model 1886, made in 1892, antique, sn73210.
