Description:
This Colt is a Model 1851 Navy Factory Deluxe Exhibition Engraved by Gustave Young with Ivory grips with the rare Iron Grip straps! This Colt is superb in many different ways, the historical significance of this gun is incredible. The gun was engraved by the hand of one of the best engravers of the period, Gustave Young, This Colt has many unique features you don't see in a Gustave Young piece; in the engraving on the right side of the frame you can see a panel scene dogs head, Gustave Young dog heads are unlike no other, You very rarely see a "Panel Scene" dogs head by Gustave Young. On the left side of the frame there is a scrolled "Colts Patent" which is commonly found on his pieces. On the left side of the barrel there is an incredible and rarely seen hidden Elephant head which is magnificent, On the right side there is a birds head engraved, The birds head is commonly found on the left side of the barrel. Most of Gustave Young pieces only have 1 hidden engraving feature in it. This Colt has 3. All areas are covered with floral scrolls and other typical Gustave Young used Patterns. The barrel is marked with British Proofs and also on the cylinder although it does have a New York Barrel Address. Some of these Gustave Young 1851's were in fact London proofed with a New York address, but is by no means common. The cylinder retains 85% scene visible. All serial numbers match, the barrel serial number is weak but it is matching. This Colt also has the seldom encountered Iron grip straps. Most 1851's were finished with a brass trigger guard, but this one was fitted with an iron guard. The Iron Guard is beautifully engraved. The barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, loading lever, and cylinder are all marked with the serial number 28,306. The original Ivory grips are in beautiful solid condition, no cracks or chips and fit tight. This is truly a magnificent seldom seen Colt. I have been able to dig up some original records taken by Gustave Young, and they mention 1851 Model's with serial numbers from 1 to 5 numbers away, This gun was certainly in that same shipment. What had been specualted for many decades and has now been proven is the dots engraved on the top of the hammer was marked by Gustave Young to keep track of the time of work he performed on each revolver, The highest known one has 7. This Colt has 6, it is the second highest amount of time known to be marked by Gustave Young. I can no where locate another 6 dot, only 3 or 4 dot guns. There is something significant about this piece but I cant seem to put my finger on it, I'm sure more research could benefit this Colt.
