CIVIL WAR AMES MFG. CO. U.S. NAVY MODEL 1860 NAVAL CUTLASS WITH SCABBARD DATED 1862. Serial numbered inside quillon "30m957" is correct and should be consistant with all Naval issued Ames cutlasses. Correct 10 rivets on knuckle bow with original basket and very old patina on brass has never been cleaned. Some period of use dents to basket. Solid construction and NOT loose. Original wood grip with most of the leather and pitch wrap. Original leather washer. Blade with original finish/patina and 26" single fullered blade dated "1862" with "U.S.N." and inspector's initials. Reverse with "Ames Mfg. Co, Chicopee, Mass" in scroll banner. Original false edge never sharpened with original tip and no dings in edge as well as being straight. Fine reproduction scabbard perfect fit. Ames produced 22,300 for the War effort and all serial numbered as such.
