Description:
Springfield Model 1842 Pre Mexican War .69 Caliber Smoothbore Percussion Musket Dated 1845. Features 3 band fastened walnut stock with sling swivels intact, 42” round barrel with bayonet lug on underside of barrel. Lock marked SPRING/FIELD/1845 behind hammer with Eagle/U.S. in front of hammer with barrel marked V/P/Eagle’s Head. Both bayonet & top of buttplate stamped U.S. Overall, very good original condition with ramrod & bayonet present, metal shows an un-cleaned chocolate brown patina with some pitting present on the breech & tang. Stock is very good with initials “W.H.I” or could be “W.H.R” carved in left side, likely those of the soldier that carried this musket. Crisp action with good bore showing moderate pitting. The Model 1842 was the first regulation armory-pattern percussion musket as well as the first firearm produced by both national armories, “Springfield” & “Harpers Ferry”. The Model 1842 was also the last of the infantry pattern smoothbore .69 caliber muskets. This 1845 dated Springfield is 1 of 12,107 produced by Springfield Armory that year, compared to 2,225 coming out of Harpers Ferry. The 1842’s played a large role in the civil war especially in the early years. Overall a nice, original, un-cleaned Civil War example of the Springfield Model 1842 Musket.
