Description:
Civil War imported Enfield Pattern 1856 Army Short Rifle aka “Sergeant’s Rifle”. Original two band rifle musket .577 caliber with correct 33” barrel with 3 grooves, saber bayonet lug & original knurl & slotted ramrod. Lock marked 1861/Tower in front of hammer with Crown behind hammer without the “V.R.” which is correct for Civil War imports. Assembly numbers are visible on both stock & barrel with left side of stock marked 112 & top barrel flat stamped with Roman numeral XII, this was a common practice done by the Confederacy & it is likely this particular rifle belonged to the south. The export proof marks on the left side of barrel breech are strong and clear and exhibit a provisional proof mark, a gauge mark (25) for .577 caliber, viewer’s marks, and another gauge stamp. The 1861 dated rifles from Tower were mounted with brass or iron furniture. The brass mounted examples are far more common than the rare iron furnished rifles. Due to the iron mountings being difficult to engrave, the Confederate inventory numbers would be stamped on the stock as opposed to the metal. This particular rifle features iron furniture including trigger guard, buttplate, barrel bands & the side screw washers. Overall in very good condition with an un-cleaned dark patina, crisp action & very good bore. This rare & desirable Civil War Pattern 1856 Short Rifle would make a great addition to any Civil War Collection.
