Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade, .270 Win. 24” barrel. The gun was manufactured in 1950, serial number 161963. The stock was made by The Custom Shop for Roger Rule on television, Outdoor Channel, The GunFather, January 2016.
History of the Stock: This gun belongs to me (Roger Rule), author of the book,The Rifleman’s Rifle, a treatise on the Winchester pre-64 Model 70s. When I purchased the rifle several years ago (second-hand, but in mint condition), I removed the factory Super Grade stock, and installed a standard Model 70 stock with classic comb to save the Super Grade stock from damage during hunting trips. Over the years I never hunted with this rifle after sighting it in, shot less than a box of ammo. Along the way, during a divorce and several moves, the original Super Grade stock was damaged (not on the gun).
One day, I received a call from Louis Tuminaro, owner of The Custom Shop, Hamilton Montana, who invited me to do a guest appearance on his show, The GunFather, on the Outdoor Channel. He told me he had begun to make replacement stocks in Super Grade for Winchester pre-64 Model 70s. When I told him I needed a replacement Super Grade stock, he offered to make it if I would appear on his show. Since it was a replacement and not original, I had him use genuine ebony for the tip and paid for the upgrade of exhibition-grade American walnut. I first saw the completed stock, this one, when he unveiled it to me in live action during the filming of the Season 2 episode called “The devil is in the details”.
The finished stock is amazing: the wood grain figure and color came out better than I expected. The fancy feather crotch walnut would easily grade as Exhibition Grade. When I examined the interior inletting of the stock, Tuminaro’s work looks so close to Winchester’s, that I asked him to put some kind of mark or brand in the stock on future ones so an expert can know they are made by Louie.
Since the unveiling, this rifle has remained unfired and stood in my gun cabinet alongside a Rigby Light Deluxe Best Quality .30-06 and a Holland & Holland De Luxe Modele Best Quality.375, and it is this .270 that stands out and looks the classier of the three.
LOP is 13 1/2”, Weight 9 lb.4 oz. with scope system.
The rifle is fitted with an Austrian-made Kahles 3-9x42 MC with Multi-Plex reticle in low-mounted Redfield base and rings, perfectly matched for the stock's comb height.
Condition: All metal work is original Winchester, bore is perfect, and there are no handling marks – condition of the rifle would be described as MINT condition.
