Description:
SOLD ** Arrizabalaga Sidelock Ejector Best 12 Ga., 28"- SELF-OPEN-
Excellent Plus

Arrizabalaga, SXS, 12 Ga., 28”, 2 ¾”, SKT & SKT, DT, Straight Grip, Splinter Forearm, Matted Concave Rib, Coin Finish Receiver, Purdey-style engraving, gold line cocking indicators, reticulated trigger, self-opener. This gun is a clone of a Holland & Holland Royal and is shown in detail on my YouTube videos, Episode 7.

A BEST GUN: The House of Pedro Arrizabalaga is one of the world’s best gun makers. They build a traditional Holland & Holland type sidelock easy-opening action.  Their entire line of fine shotguns are Top-of-the-Line, Best Guns; they do not make lower grades.

Metal: Arrizabalaga is standard with traditional features of the highest quality gun with beaded fences, H&H type self-opening mechanism, chopper lump chrome-lined barrels, automatic ejectors, H&H hand-detachable high-grade double seared sidelocks with an articulated front trigger, H&H Southgate ejectors, intercepting sears, bushed strikers, gas escape valves, and autosafety. These are features generally found on Boss's, Purdey's and Holland & Holland Royal grade guns which new cost between 100K and 200K!

Finish is Arrizabalaga’s beautiful polished coin-finished receiver with the finest Purdey-style rose and scroll hand engraving by an Eibar master, with a Churchill hand-milled rib separating the deep rust blue barrels.
Try to find another Eibar double with self-opening; there are very few. This is serial number 14905.

Stock: AAA select French walnut buttstock has strong streaky black figure with beautiful burgundy color reminiscent of that found on Stradivarius violins.  The checkering is executed flawlessly by hand in point pattern, 24 lpi – double border with drop points (tear drops). The butt is checkered as well – all classic English styling with straight-hand stock, fitted with a vacant inlaid oval, and splinter forearm with an Anson forearm release in an engraved inlaid forearm tip escutcheon.  Measurements: 1 7/16” x 2 1/8” x 14 9/16"  weight 6 lbs 13 oz. The stock has slight cast off for the right hand.

Condition:
The pleasing figure and great color of the Turkish Walnut contrasts stunningly with the clean polished coin-finished frame and deep blue barrels. The blue remains 99%, Wood at 97% with some minor handling marks, and checkering is 100%.  The bores are “as new” and the barrels remain tight on face.

Eibar Spain Guns:
The House of Pedro Arrizabalaga stands out as a premier gun maker located in the Eibar region of Spain, the Pantheon of Spanish gun makers. In this Basque country of northern Spain, Eibar gun makers have become world famous for the best value in “Best Gun” quality sidelock actions for side-by-side shotguns.  I first encountered the strange name of Arrizabalaga during a personal visit to John Robert’s Rigby in London in 1993.  I was shown a line of fine shotguns which I assumed were Rigby shotguns and told that they were from a small company, Arrizabalaga, in Spain that was making guns as good as any house in London and at such a modest price comparatively that Rigby had basically discontinued all but just special orders of their shotguns for tried and true customers of the past.

All of these Basque Best Guns are internally a copy of the Holland & Holland Royal (with H&H Southgate ejectors, H&H Assist Opening, H&H Hand-detachable sidelocks).  Owning an Arrizabalaga is like getting a Holland & Holland Royal mechanically, but with Purdey engraving, the best of both worlds.  And there is no better Eibar-made gun.  This includes the top of the line Aya, Grulla RL Supreme, Garbi Armes 103B, and the line of Arrieta 800 and above.

Here’s a clip from Double Gun Journal  Vol. 1 Issue 3 Summer 1990
“The House of Pedro Arrizabalaga” by Don Hardin

“Arrizabalaga is a custom maker, some have termed the house “The Purdey of Spain” due to the conservative approach to the trade.  All guns are sold before they are started.  On average this is less than 200 guns a year (nine artisans plus the head engraver).  Currently the offerings are in three choices: heavy scroll, light English scroll, and special English scroll in ascending order.  The customer may choose from Holland & Holland, Purdey, or Boss engravings.  The style of rib, forend and action coloring are individually chosen.

The wood is selected for the gun dependent on color and metal finish contrast. Wood is grown in the Pyrenees Mountains and is the same as the French walnut grown across the border.

Engraving is conservative and extremely well done.

I got the impression that the worker at Pedro Arrizabalaga felt that the gun he was producing was the best available.  I agreed so much that I now own two guns from the House of Pedro Arrizabalaga.”

The MSRP of the Arrizabalaga is $29,300 as of 2015.  Priced here to move, at $12,450, this excellent plus gun comes with leather case as shown.
