Description:
This interesting and historic antique Remington Model 1861 likely served in both the American Civil War and then the Indian Wars on the plains. This example is serial number 9344, and is the variation called an "Old Model" by collectors. There were approx. 5000 total produced in 1862 only, and the serial number range is 6494 to 10446. These "Old Models" can be identified by serial number of course, and also the lack of a cut-out in the frame for the cylinder pin wings. The .44 caliber 8-inch octagon barrel is stamped on the top "Patented Dec.17 1861 Manufactured By Remingtons' Ilion, N.Y.". They competed with the Colts of the time, and soon earned a reputation for durability, accuracy, and the capacity to handle larger powder charges than the Colt models that lacked a topstrap. After serving in the Civil War this Remington was returned to an government arsenal and was rebuilt for re-issue to troops fighting the American Indians as the country expanded to the west. The rebuild consisted of replacing/repairing any damaged or worn parts, adding the safety notches between the nipples to rest the hammer safely on a full cylinder, and a refinish of the metal parts with a blue finish. As you can see in the pictures this Remington still has a lot of that blue finish remaining, and where the blue has thinned or worn off it has an attractive patina showing. The original Walnut grips are solid and evenly worn, with the inspector's cartouche partially legible on the lower left grip panel. The bottom of the right grip panel has some letters and numbers scratched into it that are worn and not entirely legible. The bottom of the steel grip frame shows the letters "SEY" scratched into the finish. The barrel in this 1861 Old Army Remington has a remarkably clean and bright bore. The rifling is still strong with definitive lands and grooves, and it is free from pitting often present in these antique black powder pistols. If you have been looking for an antique revolver that has seen a lot of important American history, this Remington would be a great choice. It would be an excellent decorator/conversation piece as well as a great investment.
