Description:
1878 Sharps Borchardt Military Rifle with the Rare J P Lower marking. Cal. 45-70. Serial number 16,643. Barrel is 32 1/8" with correct Military graduated leaf rear sight. Top of barrel marked "OLD RELIABLE SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN." Hammerless falling block action. Receiver ring is marked "J.P. LOWER/DENVER COL." J.P. Lower was a famous early gunsmith & dealer in Denver, Colorado. 2 barrel band with forend cap, One piece forearm and straight grip stock w/ checkered steel buttplate. Left side of stock has faint "LB" cartouche. Button tipped steel cleaning rod. 50 to 55% dull fading original blue on barrel. Receiver a nice brown patina with some original blue mixing in. Wood has dark worn appearance w/ numerous handling marks. Stock has some tiny cracks on both sides of wrist. I will rate the bore a 6.5 maybe a 7 on a. Scale from 1 to 10.
