Description:

Antique Smith & Wesson “Old Army” No. 2 Revolver

S&W Cased with Bone Dice & Original Cartridge Box

Here we present an antique Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 “Old Army” Revolver, made from 1861-1874 in Springfield, Massachusetts. About 77,000 were produced in total. Smith & Wesson had a distinct advantage in the handgun market since they owned the Rollin White Patent for the bored through cylinder. This allowed metallic cartridge ammunition to be easily loaded and unloaded, much in the way that we know revolvers today. Despite this enormous advantage, their military style handgun offering was only in .32 caliber rimfire, much smaller than the .44 caliber Army standard. Nevertheless, the No. 2 saw combat in the American Civil War as officers and enlisted men alike privately purchased them to bring to the battlefield. Custer was known to have owned a pair, and Wild Bill Hickok had one on him the night he was killed.

The overall condition is fine. The original blue is 30% with a very nice, even patina making up the balance. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match on the bottom of the frame and the grips, as do the factory assembly numbers on the barrel, cylinder and frame under grips: “(L)37”. The rosewood grips are fine and hardly show wear. The bore is clearly rifled and clean. The action is strong. The case is old, and in good repair. It comes with two original bone dice, as well as an original cartridge box.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is octagonal and 6 inches in length.

Caliber: .32 rimfire

The bore is in fine condition and the firing mechanism is strong.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
