Description:
NSN, .79 caliber, 44" barrel with a dark, lightly pitted bore. This is a large musket that has all-iron fittings with an unmarked, banana-shaped lock that has a bridled pan, swan-necked cock, and distinctive Austrian safety pin behind the hammer pivot. The metal has turned to an even dark plum-brown over time with a few specks of silvering at the muzzle and on a few of the high edges and projections. The only marking we could find was a small stamp on the interior of the lockplate (either “WV" or “WY"). The European walnut stock has numerous small scratches and handling marks scattered about the old russet-brown varnish, and there are what could be some faintly discernible owner names or unit identifiers on the sides of the buttstock. The lock inletting has some cracks and chips around the edge and there are some further with-the-grain cracks along the forearm, as well as some age and usage wear on the right side of the barrel breech area. The original bayonet retention hook is no longer present, the middle band does not have the rounded flanges on the underside that are still present on the first band, the front trigger guard screw is missing, and the barrel tang screw is a slightly too long replacement. The original iron ramrod is still included, and has moderate pitting along its length, while the lock itself, which is quite robust, is mechanically excellent. These muskets were built to Austrian specifications by several German and Liege manufacturers during the late 18th century, with many finding their way to British North America and the nascent United States. This is a handsome, well preserved example that would make a great addition to any Revolutionary War collection, and a nice piece for display. Antique
