Description:
Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle

Very Fine with Bayonet, Frog, Sling and Beautiful Case Colors

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle with original bayonet, frog and sling, made in 1886 by Springfield Armory. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.

This specimen is in fine overall condition. Nearly all of the original blue is intact. The case colors on the breech block are quite beautiful and makes this rifle stand out among others. Another thing that makes this rifle stand out is the presence of the original accoutrements: the U.S. marked bayonet, frog and sling. The rifle is outfitted with a Buffington leaf rear sight. The walnut stock is in fine condition with the cartouches being very sharp. There is a “P” in an oval to the rear of the trigger guard and the inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock reading “SWP/1886” for Samuel W. Porter. This gun was made for the new and heavier 45-70-500 cartridge. You seldom come across such a fine rifle with original field gear.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 32 5/8 inches in length.

Caliber: 45-70 Govt (45-70-500)

Bore is in excellent condition. The firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is an excellent example with a full array of accoutrements for your fine collection.
