Description:

RARE Antique WARNER Percussion Pocket Revolver

Civil War Pocket Pistol 1 of only 9,000 Made

Here we present an antique James Warner Patent Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1860, in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Warner was a prolific inventor and gun maker who was at one time or another engaged with the following gun makers: Springfield Arms Co., Massachusetts Arms Co. Edwin Wesson, Wesson Stevens & Miller, and Warner & Wesson. He managed to distinguish himself from many other gun makers by being sued for patent infringement and losing twice, to Colt and to Smith & Wesson, respectively—once with a percussion design and once with a cartridge design. As would be expected, he had to stop production in each instance. The first occasion was with Warner’s preemptive manufacture of a revolving percussion rifle, since Colt’s patent was about to expire, when, in fact, Colt received a patent extension. He was forced to cease production and label his guns for S&W on the second occasion.

This revolver features antique ivory grips. The top strap of the frame is marked “JAMES WARNER SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A.” The cylinder holds 6 shots of .31 caliber ball. The cylinder is marked with “WARNER’S PATENT 1857”. Note that this was the same year in which Colt’s patents expired.

The overall condition is very good. The steel has a pleasant aged patina. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The antique ivory grips are solid. The bore is rifled and clean. The action is strong.
