Description:
Pre-WWII Nazi “Sneak” DWM Luger Pistol w HJ Knife

Treaty of Versailles Arms Violation, Dating c 1930

Here we present a German DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) Luger “Sneak” Pistol, made between the two World Wars, circa 1930. After the Great War, the victors imposed limits on German arms production, as well as the size of the military and many other things via the Treaty of Versailles. Two of these restrictions were 1) that the barrel length be less than 100mm, and 2) the caliber had to be less than 9mm. The first restriction appears to have had the aim to complicate the manufacturing process and necessitate retooling, however, the modular design of the Luger allowed the manufacturers to simply reduce the barrel length and continue as normal. The caliber restriction was rather ignored it seems.

This specimen was made circa 1930, when DWM was transitioning its tooling and remaining parts to the Mauser Company. The reason that this is called a “sneak” pistol is that it defied the restrictions placed on German weapons manufacturing for barrel length, caliber, and numbers produced. Therefore, these pistols were not marked with the year of production like usual, and bear commercial proof marks. Another reason for these being so marked is that these were likely made from left over parts stock from DWM and assembled by Mauser. A large portion of these guns went to arm Police departments, which would later be centralized under the Nazi government as the Ordnungspolizei in 1936.

This pistol is marked with a “u” suffixed serial number, one of the three suffixes used in these “sneak” Lugers. All numbers match. The right side of the frame is marked with a Waffenamt, as is the left side of the barrel. The barrel is also marked “SU/25”. The left side of the frame is marked with the commercial proof “crown/N”, as is the side of the toggle. The “DWM” monogram is on top of the toggle. The wooden base of the magazine is marked with an eagle.

The overall condition of this pistol is fine. The blue finish is near 100% as are the straw-colored parts. Markings are clear and legible. The grips are in fine condition with sharp checkering and matching numbers. All numbers match. The bore is fine and the action is excellent.

This fine pistol also comes with a very nice Hitlerjugend knife. These were issued to boys in the Hitler Youth, ages 14 to 18. It is sharp and meant to be used. Both the knife and scabbard are of sturdy construction, but it is also a good-looking tool. The scales bear the emblem of the Nazi youth organization, the red and white diamond with a swastika in the center. The obverse is marked with the maker’s code “RZM/M7/25” for Wilhelm Wagner, Solingen-Merscheid. This knife is in fine condition. This would make a fine set for your collection.
