It was 1 of only 100 purchased by the U.S. Army to be field tested in the western United States. This line of pistols was originally named the “New Departure Model” and featured a grip safety, top break frame and an automatic ejector. It was chambered for 5 shots of .38 S&W, and was distinguished from the commercial line by a blued finish, a 6 inch barrel and “U.S.” stamped into the side of the ejector housing under the barrel. The serial range of those 100 sent to the government for field testing was 41333 to 41470. This is a very rare opportunity to own an extremely rare U.S. military firearm. Who knows how many of these are left of the original 100? Certainly some may have been destroyed or lost, and some may be forgotten in a box somewhere. This one has lasted these 126 years and remained in very good condition. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to own something truly rare. Included is a Smith & Wesson factory archive letter from January 2, 2008 that describes the revolver in question by serial number and confirms that this is one of those that was sent to the U.S. government for field tests. The letter is on company letterhead and has been embossed and signed by the company historian. Overall condition of this piece is in good condition with an even gray patina throughout. Serial numbers match. Markings are clear. The hard rubber grips show signs of use, but are structurally sound. The bore is in good condition and the action is fine. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. You won’t find this anywhere else. Barrel is 6 inches in length. Caliber: .38 S&W Bore is in good condition. The firing mechanism is functional. Overall condition as seen in photos. Here is a very rare U.S. military firearm for your collection. Interested in owning two? We currently have two in our possession. Very Fast. Very Safe.
