THIS IS A MODEL 1871 U.S. ARMY .50-70 ROLLING BLOCK MUSKET WITH ORIGINAL SPRINGFIELD FULL NICKEL FINISH! AND ALL IN EXC. OVERALL CONDITION! According to the relatively new book REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLES OF THE WORLD by Layman, in the early 1870s Springfield was experimenting with nickel plating and tin plating of arms and obviously this was one! I have seen a few others, but mostly they were commercial Rolling Blocks nickel plated by Remington- they were popular in the Southwest and south of the border (interesting to note that most of the .44-40 Baby Rolling Block carbines were full nickel plated). This one retains excellent very slightly cloudy nickel on the barrel (from age) but nearly full coverage including the rear sight, barrel bands and rear swivel (needs front swivel only, receiver shows most of the nickel intact with some normal freckling and some light wear mainly to the left side and bottom front section, exc.+ wood with sharp and clear "ESA" cartouche, Exc. and sharp Rem. markings on the upper tang, U.S. marked butt plate, left side of the receiver correctly marked with "MODEL 1871" and right side has the eagle motif with correct sharp "U.S. Springfield 1872" markings, minty bright bore, tight action with correct "safety" in which the hammer falls slightly to a safety notch when the breech block is closed (found only on this model and the New York contract .50-70 rifles- it was a great feature that should have been included in ALL Rolling Blocks). This one has it all: Rarity , historical U.S. Military issue during the Indian Wars period, condition, great caliber etc. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: REMINGTON & SPRINGFIELD Model: 1871 U. S.
