The serial on the firearm is 144403A which indicated a manufactuer date of 1883. The firearm has been reblued during it's lifetime, and whom ever did the bluing, brought the lettering down to a depth, that still shows the winchester letters, but they sanded the caliber down so it is not visible. From micing the depth, width, this is a 38/40 caliber Winchester. The butt stock shows the typical wear and handling for a firearm of it's age, There are slight dents and scratch's on the butt stock. The forearm shows slight wear but it rated good. The bore on the 24 inch octagon barrel is rated poor, as there are multiple wear down the barrel, especially in the middle portion of the bore. The action functions good, and shows no binding, or loose parts within the receiver or action area. This firearm would make a good firearm for reenactors or living history presentors, that do not need a firearm that would be shot regularly.
