Description:
Roy Vail Custom Rifle
.270 WCF, SOLID RIB, OCTAGON BARREL

General Specs: Roy Vail, .270 WCF, 7lbs 9oz, Bolt Action Rifle
Serial Number: A1382

Roy Vail was a custom gunmaker that built rifles and shotguns that could vary from modest to extraordinary.  He made guns for the famous and wealthy, including President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  This rifle is one of his very best and among a small handful of guns built to this level of features and craftsmanship.  With a 22" custom octagon barrel forged with integral full length solid rib and front sight ramp, built on a commercial Mauser action, chambered for the popular and accomplished .270 Winchester Center Fire cartridge that is famous for its accuracy and flat shooting characteristics.  The engraving is deeply cut and heavily shaded with heavy raised gold inlays of desert sheep, antelope, elk, and lion.  There is perfectly inlaid gold wire at the base of the barrel, around the floor plate, and the trigger guard.  Gorgeous!  There is extensive engraving extending 5" up the barrel, the bolt and its parts are uniquely engraved, as is the grip cap, which is also adorned with a gold lion's head complete with diamonds in his eyes!  Roy Vail inlaid a gold bar with his name in the top rib as well.  Search the internet and you will find that this is Roy Vail's signature rifle, with none more ornate or complete...his masterpiece.  The stock is a beautiful piece of French walnut in Monte Carlo style with a full raised cheek piece ornately carved into the stock, rosewood forend cap, and perfect borderless checkering in 24 LPI, terminating in a checkered horn butt plate.  The bore is perfect with crisp rifling, the trigger breaks clean at 3.5lbs with zero creep or travel.  No cracks, splits, or deep dents, only a few light handling marks in the wood.  The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounts.  The Williams peep was original equipment at the time of build.  This is not just a "looker" either, but a dynamic short rifle that comes up like a fine side x side shotgun for easy sight acquisition.  A fabulous custom rifle, so don't miss out.  Thanks for looking!

From Blue Book of Gun Values:

VAIL, ROY

Previous custom shotgun and rifle maker located in Warwick, NY circa 1950s - early 1970s.
Roy Vail was a top quality custom gunmaker who manufactured approx. 150 custom shotguns and 200 custom rifles. Francotte actions were typically used on his SxSs, and he would add the wood, engraving inlays, and checkering.  Each gun must be evaluated individually for its overall desirability factor, which includes configuration, condition, embellishments, and quality of wood and checkering.
