Description:
As a matter of interest: At the age of thirty-six, Doc Holiday died in Glenwood Springs in late 1887, having survived a number of gunfights in Tombstone, Arizona and elsewhere.

This one gallon whiskey jug is boldly stenciled “Ed. S. Hughes / Glenwood Springs, Colo. / 1910”, but Hughes was there much earlier

Having formerly lived in Leadville, E. S. Hughes is listed in Glenwood Springs, CO each year in the 1888-1895 Bradstreets.  In addition to the saloon business, the 1896, 1899 & 1909 Colorado State Business Directories also list Ed. S. Hughes as proprietor of “Glenwood Springs Bottling Works”.  A bottling enterprise was a practical expansion of the saloon businessAfter each day of business, bottles were gathered up for re-filling.

Edward (sometimes a.k.a. Edwin) S. Hughes (born Apr 1858) is listed as “Liquor Dealer” at Glenwood Springs in the 1900 Census.  E. S. Hughes is listed as “Liquors & Cigars” at Glenwood Springs in the 1900, 1905, and 1912 R. L. Duns.

The date “1910” likely signifies construction of a new building in Glenwood Springs.  The 1910 Census still lists Edwin S. Hughes as “Liquors” at Glenwood Springs.  Edwin S. Hughes died in 1915 at Glenwood Springs.

This jug measures 10-1/2” to the top, 7-1/8” to the shoulder, and has a 7-1/2” diameter base.  It is in nearly perfect condition, with one shallow chip (1” x 7/8”) on the bottom near edge at 12:00 in photo.  Chips from the bottom are normal on larger jugs, as they were handled often in getting re-filled.  No other chips or cracks.  See highly-detailed pictures.
