“OHIO” Marked CIVIL WAR Antique Swiss 1842 Musket
Historical European Import Musket for Ohio Volunteers
Here we present an antique Swiss 1842 Percussion Musket, made circa the 1840s, then sold as surplus and imported to Ohio to arm Ohio Volunteers for the American Civil War. The war precipitated under the 24th Ohio Governor William Dennison Jr., a lawyer, businessman and politician, who was part of the budding Republican Party and an admirer and ally of President Abraham Lincoln. He was vehemently anti-slavery and anti-discrimination, refusing requests to return runaway slaves from neighboring states to the South even before the war. He denounced the secessionists as they left the Union.
During his single term in office, Dennison successfully raised over 100,000 troops for the Union Army, establishing training camps in his state. He was an ardent supporter of the Union, and quite effective in using the power of his office to help in any way possible. He very quickly took control of his state’s vital infrastructure, railroads and telegraph lines, and unprompted, sent his troops to Virginia under General McClellan to protect the Wheeling Convention that formed West Virginia to be a new “free” state.
The federal government, quite unprepared for this conflict, did not have enough small arms or much else with which to supply the troops. There was a mad scramble at the beginning of the Civil War to acquire weapons overseas, really of any sort that could fire a projectile until federal armories and contracts could catch up with demand. Many surplus muskets, some converted from flintlock, were imported out of Europe. This Swiss 1842 Musket seems to have come to the United States through Belgium, one of the biggest small arms producers and traders in the world. This musket was put into the hands of the Ohio volunteers that Dennison raised up in the early days of the war, hence the “OHIO” markings on the stock.
The overall condition of this musket is good to very good. The metal surfaces share an even patina and are lightly pitted. The lock is marked “Crown/AB” and the top of the barrel is marked “T”. The bolster on the side opposite the lock is marked “*/B”. The stock shows war-use, as well as two “OHIO” markings around the wrist. Near the muzzle has a crack and the foremost barrel band is slightly oversized. The bore is lightly rifled and is clean. The action is strong.
