Description:
I will entertain reasonable offers
Merkel 202E (mistyped in Title) - Pre-War. Beautiful high relief engraved Merkel O/U shotgun, 12 gauge, 30” ventilated rib Krupp-marked barrels, blued finish to barrels, raised carved deluxe finely grained wood stocks, auto ejectors, double triggers, chocked F/F, 15" LOP to front trigger, horn trigger guard and pistol grip cap with engraved, checkered horn butt plate, S/N 13808, in overall fine condition displaying the majority of its blued finish to the barrel assembly, fine Germanic style floral engraving to the receiver with game scenes on both sides of the receiver, corresponding floral engraving to breech end of barrels and finely accomplished raised floral carvings to the wrist area and forend of the wood stocks; crisp actions, bores are shiny with no signs of pitting or corrosion.
The following is analysys of the gun by Wolfgang Krause of oldgermanguns: according to my investigations your shotgun was produced by Ernst August Merkel (21.08.1853 - 26.01.1912). He was the older brother of the three founding brothers of "Gebrüder Merkel" Company.
His son (from second marriage) Rudolf Otto Merkel (27.01.1892 - ~ 1950 ties) took over his company in 1912. The business extinguished before WWII. Unfortunately I didn´t have an exact date about.
The engraver working for him was called Karl Feuchter.
Your shotgun was not proofed by a proof house. The proof marks are missing and also the weapons SN is missing on the system. The cause for this could be:
a) the shotgun was finished after the company was closed and then it was sold privately and more or less illegally.
b) the shotgun stayed in a stock until end of WWII and then was taken over by a GI for "free" (most probable)
Appears to be of pre-war construction. An outstanding deluxe Merkel that would be very expensive to replicate at today’s prices.
No markings on receiver, make/model is identified from info from previouse owner and Blue Book and Gun Digest (email for supporting info)
Additional pictures of specific areas will be provided on request.
