Description:

Albany NEW YORK Antique Half-Stock .41 Long Rifle

W Part Octagon, Part Round P&S REMINGTON Barrel

Here we present an antique Half-Stock Long Rifle with a Warren of Albany lock and a P&S Remington barrel, made circa 1840 in New York, USA.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This .41 caliber rifle features an engraved lock marked “WARREN/ALBANY”. Warren appears to be a lock maker based in Albany, New York, whose locks have been found on fine precision rifles in the Northeast United States. The barrel is a very nice example of one made by Philo and Samuel Remington (the sons of Eliphalet Remington, looked at as the original founder of the company), and is marked “P&S REMINGTON”. This was made in Ilion, New York. The barrel features a 10-1/4-inch octagonal section at the rear, with the rest being round. Front and rear sights are adjustable and the muzzle is drilled for a “false muzzle” protector. The stock is nicely adorned with German silver plaques. The hardware is of brass, with the trigger guard tang acting as a pistol grip.

The overall condition is very good. The surfaces of the iron parts are smooth and patinated. The markings on the lock and barrel are clear and legible. The stock is nicely carved and decorated and in very good condition with a small repair forward of the lock. The bore is rifled and clean. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Here is a very nice example of a long rifle made in New York by some notable craftsmen. Who knows where it has been and what it has seen from there!

Barrel is 34 inches in length.

Caliber: .41

Overall condition as seen in photos.
