Description:
SHARPS 1867 CARBINE

This is a very scarce Sharps New Model 1959 which was made during The War Between the States. Although it was manufactured as a percussion arm, it was later converted to metallic cartridge .50-70 Gov’t in 1867 under a U.S. contract with Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co. According to Franks Sellers in his wonderful book, SHARPS FIREARMS, only 1900 model 1867 carbines were made.

This one is correct in every detail and does not have a barrel liner, retaining the original six-groove rifling and the original sights. This early conversion also has the spring retracted firing pin unlike the later cam-retracted firing pins.

True to the contract, the stock on this carbine was also refinished at the factory and retains most of that factory finish along with the very sharp and crisp “DFC” cartouche on the left side of the buttstock.

While the bore does have some pitting, the rifling is sharp and the bore is shiny.

As you can imagine, the survival rate of these rare variations was very low, and those that have survived are usually in very rough condition from decades of hard use. Comparitively speaking, this one is Like Brand New!

All in all, this is a rare and beautifully-crisp and sharp example of the early Sharps Cartridge Conversions. It could be a great centerpiece in any Sharps collection.
