Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1816 2-Band Flintlock Musket, made by Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, circa 1823. The Model 1816 was the largest production of U.S. flintlock muskets, with an impressive run from 1816-1840. Both national armories, Springfield and Harpers Ferry, were involved as were about 16 different contractors. Conflicts during this period included numerous encounters with Native Americans, as well as the Mexican-American War. While the vast majority of the Model 1816 were full-length 3 banded muskets, this example features 2 bands and a shorter overall length. The barrel measures at 35-9/16 inches, and the stock 45-1/2 inches. Muskets in this type of configuration were used by artillery troops as they were lighter and more handier. The lock is marked with a faint federal eagle over “U.S.” The back of the lock is marked “SPRING/FIELD/18_3”. The front of the trigger guard is marked “GAV”, possibly government inspector marks. There is a hint of an original inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock. The overall condition of this musket is good. The iron surfaces are still mostly armory bright. The walnut stock is shy around the barrel tang, with a section missing just over the lock. The butt stock has various graffiti. The bore appears to have widened out over time, measuring about .80 at the muzzle. The inside of the bore is a bit dirty, but could be cleaned. The action is functional. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 35-9/16 inches in length. Caliber: .69 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
