Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique SHARPS New Model 1863 Carbine

Cavalry Carbine in Original Percussion Configuration

Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine, made circa 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier.
This specimen is an example of a saddle ring carbine used extensively by the cavalry during the war. Many of these were converted on contract after the Civil War to fire the improved metallic cartridge, the 50-70 Govt. This one is in its original percussion format. It features an iron patch box in the butt, a feature which was included on a third of the New Model 1863 Production. It also includes the Sharps pellet priming system, which could be loaded into a spring-loaded magazine and used instead of the “hat” variety of percussion caps.

The top of this carbine’s barrel is marked “SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD, CONN.” and “NEW MODEL 1863”. The right side of the frame is marked “C. SHARPS’ PAT/OCT. 5TH 1853” and “R.S. LAWRENCE’ PAT/APRIL 12TH 1859”. The left side of the frame is marked “SHARPS’ PAT/SEPT 12TH 1846”. Both the barrel and the sling ring bar bear the U.S. inspector initials “T.W.R.” Three cartouches are still visible under and around the sling ring bar. The center cartouche was the one most protected from wear by the bar, and the first initial “A” is clearly visible with partials visible for the next two letters. One of the other cartouches was likely “T.W.R.”

This Civil War carbine looks exactly as it should having survived the conflict. Overall condition is very good. The iron parts bear a dark and heavy patina. The markings are still clear and legible. The walnut stock is solid, but certainly shows much use from its time in the war. The cartouches are visible and partially legible. The bore is sharply rifled, clean and bright. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches in length.

Caliber: .52
