Description:
For sale, a very interesting antique Enfield Snider conversion rifle that is 100% original and complete.  The American Jacob Snider invented the conversion, and it was sold to the British for converting their Pattern 1853 Enfield muzzle loading rifle which had become obsolete compared to the cartridge rifles employed by other militaries.  The Snider conversion was used by the British until the Martini Henry Rifle became available in 1874, but the British Indian Army continued to use the Enfield Snider until the end of the 19th century.  The Snider conversion was a well designed mechanism that was both strong and easy to operate, and it fired a brass cartridge by the same name; the .577 Snider cartridge.  It allowed the average British soldier to fire 10 rounds a minute versus the muzzle loading average of 3, and it proved to be significantly more accurate than the non converted Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle it was based on.  The Enfield Snider served all over the British Empire and was used in several campaigns in Africa before the gradual phase out to the Martini Henry rifle.  This particular example is all original and complete, and could still be fired if the new owner so chooses.  The lockplate is dated 1861 and the lock mechanism works perfectly.  The hammer still has the two back positions, half cock (safety position) and full cock.  This rifle has a nice even patina on the metal parts, and the stock is in great shape still showing the original cartouches.  It appears to be free from cracks or repairs, and just has some cosmetic dark stains here and there as you can see in the pictures.  The bore on this Enfield Snider is in good shape overall, with some light pitting in spots but still retaining some strong rifling with definitive lands and grooves.  Everything is nice and tight on the conversion unit, it locks up tight with a great hinge and the spring loaded firing pin works perfectly with lots of return spring pressure.  This antique rifle even still has the cleaning rod in place, and the brass and leather firing pin cover/pad to rest the hammer on when in storage that is chained to the trigger guard.  We currently have 15 rounds of .577 Snider ammo in stock that is pictured with the rifle that is available for purchase separately.  These cartridges are huge and heavy, and I included a picture of a 45-70 cartridge sandwiched between two .577 Snider cartridges to show the true scale of size.  The Enfield Snider rifles were an important step in the evolution of British military rifles in which the changeover from muzzle loading rifles to breech loading metallic cartridges occurred.  This antique military rifle would be an excellent addition to any early military rifle collection, and would also be fun to shoot!  Because this is an antique weapon, it can be shipped directly to the buyer's chosen location without the need for a FFL transfer.
