The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid round ball. As the scale of the American Civil War was beyond comprehension, it was all hands on deck to support the war effort. Many contractors were employed to join the major national armories in making rifle-muskets to arm the troops. Colt’s was one of these. The company made approximately 75,000 pieces, and contributed to updates the Model 1863 would receive. This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is marked “1863” and “U.S./COLT’S PT F.A. MFG CO./HARTFORD CT.” with a federal eagle on the lock plate and the bolster. The breech of the barrel is also marked “1863”. The breech of the barrel is proof marked “V/P/Eagle head”. The remnants of the U.S. government inspector cartouches are visible on the left side of the rifle. Overall condition is good. The iron parts are very dark and untouched. The markings in the metal are faint at times, but discernible. The walnut stock looks like it has been through a war. The bore is clearly rifled. The action is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Looking for an authentic Civil War musket to display? This one would be fantastic. Barrel is 40 inches in length.
