Description:
Model 1877 U.S. Springfield “Trapdoor” Carbine 17-8

Model 1877 U.S. “Trapdoor” Carbine, Made c. 1877-1878. Retains the breechblock marking MODEL 1873; however, the Carbine was actually renamed in official correspondence and literature as the MODEL 1877. The wrist of the stock was thickened and the comb lengthened 1-1/2” (to overall 10-1/2”); a compartment fitted in the buttstock of the carbine only for three-piece cleaning rod with trapdoor on buttplate. The 1873 date on lock was omitted. A major change was in the breechblock which was made thicker and known as the “low arch” type. Other changes were made, but not incorporated simultaneously. Inspector markings on all stocks are ESA in script over date 1877 oval panel. Breechblock markings US/MODEL 1873 only (omitting the arrows and eaglehead). Serial number range 75000 to 115000. Barrel markings of eaglehead and large V and P. See Flayderman “Guide to Antique American Firearms”. Pg. 584, 9A-370

Condition: Excellent Overall, bore is shiny with all of the rifling, looks unused; lock has a bright finish looks like a mirror. Barrel, barrel band, sight, hammer all are 95% blue with nice bright blue patina. Butt plate and trigger guard 70% blue. Stock has ESA 1877 cartouche in circle, stock has a light varnish,  no dents, dings and scratches, excellent. Mechanics great, has 3 clicks when locked. Just a great and rare Springfield Trapdoor carbine in excellent condition with a minty bore. Hard to find like this.
(17-8) $4,495.00
