Description:
This is a handsome sword that measures 34 1/8" overall with a 29 1/4" curved, single-edged blade having wide single fullers. The blade has a bright, additional polish with sharpening marks along the edge (the Shashka was supposed to be kept razor sharp) and mottled surface freckling throughout. The ricasso has several inspection proofs and a partial maker's marking on the reverse. The brass hilt has a pale yellow-ochre patina with dark spots, and laurel leaf embellishments. The royal cypher of Tsar Nicholas II is present on the Phrygian helmet-shaped pommel, which is also missing the pommel cap. The grooved wooden grip is in very good shape, although there are two with-the-grain cracks along either side where the grip meets the guard ferrule. The brass and leather scabbard are in very good condition with yellow-ochre on the brass furniture with the leather flaked lightly along the edges.
