Description:
American Percussion Long rifle stamped N.REITZEL NTON on side facet of the barrel. The gun is 52 ½ inches overall with a heavy 36 inch aprox .40 caliber rifle octagon barrel. The maple full stock has a plain german silver oval side plates in the cheek piece on the stock’s left side and the right side of the buttstock along with 2 teardrop german silver pieces on either sides of the wrist, eight German silver inlays and a german silver piece in front of the trigger guard. It has double set triggers and brass hardware and could have been used as a target rifle. Set triggers work fine. The back trigger is set before cocking and pulling the front trigger. The simply engraved back action lock is marked “ JOHN ARCHER Warranted” and has some floral engraving.
I have not researched Reitzel and do not know where he worked, only that he was an inspired designer and master craftsman who probably apprenticed and worked in Northeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey or New York or Ohio in the 1820’s or 1830’s. Stock is clean with a hairline crack behind lock and a small piece replaced below the ignition. Action works fine. The backlock gives this piece a pleasing stream lined appearance .
