Burnside Rifle Company (Bristol, RI), ORIGINAL ANTIQUE (NOT A REPRODUCTION), CIVIL WAR CARBINE, percussion breechloader carbine, .54 caliber (fires cartridges having either a copper or tapered foil casing), 21" barrel, s/n 33620 (produced during the Civil War between 1863 AND 1865 ONLY by the Burnside Rifle Company which was named after their treasurer who was the famous Civil War general, Ambrose E. Burnside),
Among calvary units armed with Burnsides during the Civil War were the 1st Michigan, 3rd Indiana, 5th,6th,7th Ohio, 1st New Jersey, 3rd West Virginia, 3rd, 14th, 18th Pennsylvania, and the 2nd, 12th, 14th, and 16th Illinois,
THIS CARBINE WAS OWNED BY THE PRESENT OWNERS GRANDFATHER, blued barrel has mellowed into an attractive dull smooth patina over the past 150 years, case colored receiver exhibits remnants of color (see photos), SURPRISINGLY, THE BORE IS VERY GOOD WITH WIDELY SCATTERED MODERATE PITTING AND VERY SHARP RIFLING, wood exhibits NO cracks and retains the inspector's cartouche which is faint, wood finish original and evenly worn, missing rear sling swivel,
