Spencer Model 1865 Carbine 50 Caliber 17-9
 
Condition: Barrel has a nice brown patina, and frame is fairy clean with a lot of finish with a very little light corrosion, markings are very clear on top. Wood is very good condition with some dings, dents, etc. Bore has 35-40% rifling and some corrosion, which is typical for a carbine of this era. Works perfectly mechanically. Has the Stabler cut-off, made under Burnside contract. Serial #20938.  Overall a very attractive, very good condition Spencer..

These carbines Her made by Spencer Repeating Rifle Company, Boston, Massachusetts, with some production subcontracted by Burnside Rifle Company, approximately 144,500 of which 107,372 rifles and carbines sold to the United States government. Seven-shot repeater; loaded by magazine tube fitted through center of buttstock. Operated by lowering and raising the combination trigger guard-lever. Various barrel lengths as noted below. Iron mountings; standard finish casehardened receiver, buttplate and barrel bands; blued barrel. Walnut stocks. Usual markings on top of frame SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO.BOSTON, MASS/PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860 .Model 1865: Made c. 1865-1866 .50 caliber R.F.. 20” barrel; six groove rifling. Approximately 50 percent are fitted with the Stabler cut-off.(not this one) Serial numbered approximately 1 to 23000. Additional marking at breech of barrel M 1865: See Flayderman p;633.
