Description:
Offered is a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in 300 Savage, the rarest of all standard production calibers (1 of 362) and, according to Roger Rule's book on Model 70 Rifles, the rarest standard caliber produced in Super Grade. Serial No.: 51245. Barrel stamped on bottom in front of receiver "300 Sav. 46". Clover leaf tang. Redfield gold bead front sight. The rifle is mounted with a Stith scope mount which required no extra holes; and is equipped with a Lyman Alaskan scope having crystal clear lenses. The bore is bright and shiny and has sharp lands and clean grooves, as in "near new condition".
The stock is in very fine, original condition with only the most minute dings from use, almost undetectable in pictures. Checkering is sharp and without dings or crush points. The end of the bolt knob shows wear from normal use. The receiver shows what I consider to be nearly 98% bluing condition. The barrel rates an overall 92-95% due to some (very slight) wear along the left front 8" to the muzzle. The right side of the barrel appears to be at 92-94% bluing condition. The muzzle shows "gun case" wear. The bottom 180 degrees of the barrel shows nearly 100% bluing - except as noted at the muzzle. All screws are in near perfect condition, as in "showing next to no evidence of turning". The floorplate is in 97-98% condition. Of 581,471 total Pre-64 production - only 15,881 were in Super Grade or 2.73% of total production (Roger Rule book, page 85). If one applies that percentage to the total number of rifles (362) produced in 300 Savage (Rule's book, page 100) one could extrapolate or estimate that there were only between 9-10 300 Savages in Super Grade. Talk about rarity! I have owned this rifle for 7 years and have never fired it. It came to me via Perry County Firearms - a most reputable dealer. This rifle could complete a Model 70 collection.
