Description:
Collector SA-22 Wheel Sight Grade III 1958 - Belgium made. A complete and thorough description and packing list is shown down below. This SA-22 is a rust blue, hand-rubbed oil finish (open pore wood finish), skip-line checkered and metal engraved industrial art masterpiece. As with any firearm, this SA-22 was test fired at the factory. This rifle appears fired some, but not "shot", the metal and wood condition speaks to this. Shipping and Insurance is included in the price(see details below). Please email me with any questions or for additional pictures.
PAYMENT AND CONDITIONS OF SALE:
Payment is by United States Postal Money Order and/or Bank Cashiers Check from a United States bank and/or gold bullion (U.S. Gov't Mint issue or Canadian Maple Leaf). Item ships 5 business days after the date full payment is received. Seller is not an FFL (Federal Firearms License) Dealer. Seller is a Private Seller. Seller's firearms are to be transferred to FFL Dealers only. Seller will only ship to Buyer who uses an FFL Dealer. The Buyer is responsible for locating the FFL Dealer to facilitate the firearm transfer. Receiving FFL Dealer fees are the responsibility of the Buyer. Seller will not ship to a C&R License. Buyer will need to request receiving FFL Dealer to email their FFL to Seller to initiate shipment. Once payment and a copy of the Federal Firearms License corresponding to the receiving FFL Dealer, in Buyer's area of choice, is received by Seller and the 5 business day payment window has expired; Seller will then ship firearm to Buyer's receiving FFL Dealer. Buyer would then arrange pick-up at the receiving FFL Dealer and complete the firearm inspection and paperwork at the receiving FFL Dealer location. Sales to California and other regulated states. Buyer is responsible to make sure, beyond reasonable doubt, that any item Buyer purchases is legal to own and possess in Buyer's state.
SHIPPING:
Shipping costs/fees/insurance are included in the price shown for the firearm for destinations to the lower 48 States. Alaska and Hawaii may incur additional costs/fees/insurance and would be communicated to Buyer before finalizing the transaction. All packages are sent via the United States Postal Service. Seller prefers shipping at the beginning of the week to avoid firearms in transit over weekends. Seller will package all shipments carefully and buy insurance for the full purchase price, rounded up to the next $100, and provide tracking numbers for all packaged shipments. In the unlikely event that damage occurs, it is important that you save all packaging material for the claims process.
RETURN POLICY AND SHIPPING DAMAGE:
Seller offers the following return policy - a three (3) day window to complete a reasonable inspection. The inspection three (3) day window period begins on the date of delivery to the receiving FFL Dealer. Please inspect your firearm following these conditions.
A.) Inspection must be done on the premises of the receiving FFL Dealer, only.
B.) Do not remove the firearm from receiving FFL Dealer before inspection is completed and firearm is accepted.
C.) Notification of a return must occur within three (3) days of receipt at Buyer's receiving FFL Dealer. Upon return of the firearm in the same purchased condition with all parts and accessories, as received; purchase price will be refunded less shipping/handling/insurance costs. Firearm cannot be fired or dissembled before returning to Seller. Shipping, convenience and FFL Dealer fees are not refundable and are the responsibility of the Buyer. If the firearm is damaged during shipment. First, please take photos of the shipping box/carton prior to opening. Second, proceed to opening the the shipping box/carton. Third. please take photos of the damages to firearm, parts, and/or accessories. Fourth, email notice of damages to Seller with attached photos to BrowningFNH "at" gmail and call 612-859-3347. If the firearm is damaged during shipment and does not match the description in the advertisement listing or Buyer is otherwise dissatisfied, Buyer is not to complete the transfer with the receiving FFL Dealer. Notify Seller immediately at 612-859-3347. Arrangements will be discussed and original packaging will need to be retained for determining next steps in the return and refund process.

GOAL:
Seller's goal is rather not to be the best, but to perform my best. A Buyer's satisfaction is important to me. If Buyer has read all the above, Buyer shall reasonably understand that Seller has taken time and consideration to explain how most transaction processes are to be handled and managed. SMALL MARK ON BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT-HAND SIDE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PISTOL GRIP NEAR THE BUTT STOCK SCREW. SMALL MARKS ON TOP ON BUTT STOCK, AT RECEIVER END, NEAR THE CHECKERING.

IF THIS RIFLE WAS INDEED PRODUCED IN 1958 BASED ON THE RECEIVER SERIAL NUMBER. THE BUTT STOCK - MAY - HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE BUTT STOCK ON THIS RIFLE HAS AN ELONGATED OVAL LOADING PORT. THE ELONGATED LOADING PORT STARTED SHOWING UP IN APPROXIMATELY 1960. ACCORDING TO BROWNING, IF THE BUTT STOCK ON THIS RIFLE WAS REPLACED IT IS NO DIFFERENT THAN A REPLACEMENT OF A CRACKED FORE END ON A BROWNING AUTO-5 SHOTGUN. EARLY SA-22 BUTT STOCKS WERE REPLACED WITH A DEGREE OF REGULARITY DUE TO CRACKING.
HOWEVER,...IF THIS RIFLE WAS INDEED PRODUCED IN 1959 BASED ON THE MAGAZINE STOP PLATE SERIAL NUMBER, THE SERIAL NUMBER OF RECORD FOR IMPORT PRIOR TO THE 1968 GCA, THE BUTT STOCK - MAY NOT - HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE BUTT STOCK ON THIS RIFLE WITH THIS ELONGATED OVAL LOADING PORT WOULD HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED CLOSE ENOUGH TO 1960 TO BE CONSIDERED HIGHLY LIKELY THE ORIGINAL BUTT STOCK.
FURTHER, I REMOVED THE BUTT PLATE AND THE INSIDE IS STAMPED "4" AND THE BUTT END OF THE STOCK IS MARKED WITH A "4" IN YELLOW CRAYON. THIS MEANS THE BUTT PLATE IS MATCHED TO THE CORRECT BUTT STOCK. AT THE RECEIVER END - THE BUTT STOCK HAS A "3" AND A "4" STAMPED IN THE WOOD. THE FACE OF THE RECEIVER HAS A "3" STAMPED IN THE METAL.
I SURMISE THIS - THE PLATE, BUTT STOCK AND RECEIVER TO BE A MATCH SET.
MY BEST GUESS AS TO WHAT HAPPENED FOLLOWING DEDUCTIVE REASONING,....
* THE BUTT PLATE, THE ELONGATED LOADING PORT BUTT STOCK, AND THE RECEIVER ALL APPEAR TO MATCH UP - A MATCHED SET.
* THE RECEIVER WAS MADE IN 1958 AND SERIAL NUMBERED AS SUCH.
* THE RIFLE WAS ASSEMBLED IN 1959 AND SHIPPED TO THE U.S.; THUS, ACCOUNTING FOR THE MAGAZINE STOP PLATE SERIAL NUMBER FROM 1959 AND A HIGHER PROBABILITY OF THE RIFLE BEING ASSEMBLED WITH THE ELONGATED LOADING PORT BUTT STOCK THAT STARTED IN APPROXIMATELY 1960.
* I BELIEVE THIS SA-22 IS COMPLETE AS SHIPPED FROM THE FACTORY.

FIRST-IN/FIRST OUT SHIPPING WAS NOT ALWAYS A STRONG POINT AT BROWNING/FN. I DO CREDIT BROWNING/FN FOR COMPLETE UTILIZATION OF THEIR PARTS INVENTORY.
THE ABOVE CONUNDRUM IS NOT SPECIFIC TO MY EARLY PRODUCED SA-22 IN THIS LISTING. THIS IS A CONUNDRUM FOR MANY OF THE EARLY PRODUCED SA-22's. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT JEFF TYLER MENTIONED IN THE SUPPORTING DOCUMENT I HAVE ATTACHED IN THE PHOTOS.

THE PRINT EDIT APPEARS TO HAVE OCCURRED IN 1958/59 AND CORRESPONDS TO THIS RIFLE'S RECEIVER AND MAGAZINE STOP PLATE SERIAL NUMBERS MANUFACTURE YEARS(1958 and 1959).
THE - LARGER VERSION - UNDATED - "EARLY" PRINTED - MANUAL GIVES THE RIFLE OWNER THE IMPRESSION THAT A LONG RIFLE AND A SHORT COULD BOTH BE CHAMBERED; HENCE, A TEXT EDITING CHANGE WAS NEEDED AS CHAMBERING BOTH TYPES OF ROUNDS IN THE SAME RIFLE WAS NOT POSSIBLE.
LARGE MANUALS WERE USED FROM 1956 TO EARLY 1960'S. I HAVE PERSONALLY OWNED LARGE VERSION MANUALS WITH A PRINT DATE OF "1957". ALL OTHER LARGE VERSION MANUALS I HAVE SEEN WERE NOT PRINT DATED AND HAD TEXT EDITING CHANGES THAT PROGRESSED CHRONOLOGICALLY WITH RIFLE USE INFORMATION UPDATES TO AID/HELP THE PURCHASER/OWNER. ASTUTE ATTENTION TO THESE UPDATED PRINTED TEXT EDITS ENABLE A PERSON TO MAKE A REASONABLE DETERMINATION AS TO THE YEAR THE MANUAL WAS INTRODUCED. THERE COULD BE LARGE VERSION SA-22 MANUALS WITH PRINT DATES OF "1956", '"1958" AND "1959", I JUST HAVE NOT SEEN THEM.

Extra - Browning Hard Case: Hartmann Case. Tan colored. This us the smaller Hartmann version at 9 inches wide and 23 3/4 inches long. This us the type rifle case model that succeeded the Tolex Case. This Hartmann Case appeared in 1960 and for the next 4 years.
Shell = Solid Frame is of select Virginia plywood covered with crush-grain vinyl unequaled in wearability. Two (2) locks are solid brass with draw bolts with keys. Heavy duty hinges. (Per period factory sales literature) Padding type - Durable deep padded pile. Folding handle with white plastic insert. White plastic insert is pristine with no cracks. Case is in - excellent condition, almost pristine. This case is period correct for this firearm.

The dog on the left-hand side of this receiver looks nearly identical to the left-hand side receiver dog picture in the book "Browning .22 Caliber Riles 1914 - 1984" by Homer C. Tyler, on Page 79 - Figure 108. The right-hand sides of this rifle and the Book Page 78, Figure 107 appear very similar, but not like the nearly identical dog on the left-hand side. And, for clarity purposes, the SA-22 for sale in this listing is not the SA-22 pictured in the book. This reference book is not part of this listing. See attached photos.)
