Description:
A rare and beautiful factory engraved nickel plated Smith & Wesson Russian/New Model# 3 type revolver with detatchable shoulder stock. This exceptional revolver was built by 'Orbea Hermanos, Eibar' Spain circa 1879. It is in .44 Russian caliber with a 7" barrel. This revolver is factory engraved in the 'American Manner' , that is it displays the same scroll and stippled pattern and execution as seen on numerous Colt, Winchester, and Smith & Wesson arms engraved by L. D. Nimschke and other New York City engravers of the period. The revolver is also equipped with a matching engraved detatchable shoulder stock. This deluxe stocked revolver was obviously built for sale and/or presentation in the US or Mexico.
The revolver is signed on its barrel, 'ORBEA HERMANOS (EIBAR)CON PRIVILEGIO EN ESPANA'. This well known Eibar maker sought and obtained contracts to produce revolvers of this pattern - Smith & Wesson Russian type frame and grip with S&W New Model# 3 type barrels and ejector system - for the Mexican Government ( see; "MEXICAN MILITARY ARMS, THE CARTRIDGE PERIOD 1866-1967", J.B.Hughes, Jr., Deep River Armory Inc, Houston, Texas, 1968 - pages 58-59. ). This particular factory engraved and stocked deluxe revolver is of excellent quality manufacture, and would have been the sort of temptation offered to a high ranking Mexican officer or politician to help secure a military contract. It may also have been specially ordered as an individual purchase by a high ranking officer or Haciendado. During more than a half centurie's interest in American Frontier arms this is the only example of its type I've encountered though I was told years ago that another stocked engraved example by this maker existed in a western collection.
Condition: The revolver and stock retain at least 96% of their original nickel plated finish with untouched patina and a few minor handling marks. The bore is excellent and shiny with some very minor spots of storage rust which should clean out. the mechanism is excellent with blued top latch and casehardened hammer & trigger retaining most of their original finish. The original grips are beautiful with some age checks and exceptional untouched patina. The revolver, serial 2220, bears matching numbers (220) on frame, cylinder, and barrel. The fine walnut shoulder stock attaches/detatches in the same manner as S&W revolvers. The fine walnut stock, retaining 96% original finish, is numbered 523, it's engraving, finish, and condition perfectly match the revolver with no doubt they belong together. It is possible a matching engraved 'Orbea Hermanos' revolver serial 523 with engraved stock 220 may exist.
