Description:
***   NEW PRICE   ***   James was the middle son of the famous Joseph Lang Sr. and managed his father's gunmaking company until its sale in 1886. He then went on to run his own gunmaking concern, producing a relatively small number of beautifully finished guns of all types and specifications. Built with back action, bar locks, this gun, No. 10536,  was made in 1891 and is a very fine example of his work and exhibits many features commonly found on full, bar action sidelocks from the most illustrious gunmakers. The original Damascus barrels have been re-proofed for 2-3/4" nitro cartridges and the original stock and forend are in fantastic condition for its age. The gun also retains considerable amounts of original color on lock plates and action. This all adds up to a beautiful and strong gun that is a joy to shoot and with normal maintenance should give many years of service on game or clays. This gun was restored in the Heritage Guns UK workshops and sold in 2015. Since then it has seen very light useage a small wood chip professionally repaired, and the lock pin has been replaced after the thread failed.   ***   The action is of traditional back action sidelock design and features: Top lever opening, Scott's 3rd bite engaging a top rib extension and a Purdey Bolt operated by a Scott Spindle, Double triggers bolted by an automatic top tang safety slide, Dip-edge Back action bar locks, Roger's cocking levers, Anti-friction rollers on main springs, Deeley's ejector box and Deeley & Edge forend catch. Gun weighs 6lb 14oz. Engraving style Best Foliate Scroll & Bouquet. Gold inlaid SAFE. Trigger pulls measure approximately: Front trigger 4 lbs Rear trigger 4 1/2 lbs.   ***   The original nitro Damascus barrels are 28" in length, chambered for 2 3/4" (70mm) cartridges and are of brazed dovetail lump construction with soft soldered ribs. Top rib is of the smooth, concave game type. The rib is inscribedJames Lang & Co. Limited 18 Brook Street New Bond Street London”. The chokes are of 'recessed' type and are expected to give an effective choke of about 0.010" with most cartridges. London reproof for 70mm nitro powder cartridges in 2012. The right barrel is bored 0.725 with a constriction 0.012 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The left barrel is bored 0.735 with a constriction of 0,014 for Light Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.021.   ***   The straight hand stock and splinter forend are crafted from highly figured walnut. The stock is cast-off for a right-handed shot, features a vacant white metal oval, well defined drop points and ½" Ebonite butt plate secured with engraved screws. There are light handling marks on the body of the stock and a small wooden inlet to one locktail. The forend features a finely engraved forend tip.The 24 lines per inch checkering has been freshened in a normal sidelock pattern. The stock is finished with a traditional linseed oil based preparation as used on best guns by one of the top English makers. This finish uses no grain fillers to achieve its deep, smooth lustre, only many hours of alternate build and flatting off of the surface. The stock dimensions are 14-3-4” by 1-9/16” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the right hand shot. This is a really nice gun that is sort of a sleeper. It deserves your attention as it is a great value.  ***   US Agent for Heritage Guns UK. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance and related charges. I give a three-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described. This is a great well made double with outstanding wood that will perform well on game and clays.
