Description:

Antique JOHNSON 1836 Percussion DRAGOON Dated 1838

Mexican-American War Vet, Updated for CIVIL WAR

Here we present an antique R. Johnson U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol, made in 1838, and converted to percussion in the 1850s and 60s. There were actually two manufacturers of these guns: Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. Combined, the production totals 41,000 guns. This was the last U.S. martial pistol to use the flintlock system, and many consider this the best of all U.S. flint guns due to its craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. The gun is historically significant as this was the primary issue pistol during the Mexican American War (1846-1848), and was even significantly used during the American Civil War (1861-1865), especially in the percussion converted format, due to arms shortages on both sides.

This example was made by Robert Johnson. The ramrod is a captive style to prevent loss on the battlefield. Many were converted for use by North & South during the Civil War. Principal Inspector James Harris’s and Captain William A. Thornton’s initials are just discernible inside the two cartouches set in the left side of the stock.

The overall condition is good. The conversion is one in which the percussion nipple was threaded into a new vent at the top of the barrel. Metal surfaces have a light patina. Markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is solid, with a splice on the left side. The bore is quite pitted. The mainspring is slightly weak, but the action is functional.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .54
