Description:
The Colt 1849 Pocket revolvers were manufactured 1850-1873, with serial numbers ending at 340001.  They were made both with and without a loading rammer, and the most popular barrel lengths with rammer were 4”, 5”, and 6”.

This 6” barreled example has a one-line New York address that is sharp and deep, as is “Colts Patent” on the frame.  The Stage Coach Holdup scene remains 100% sharp on the cylinder, with the “Colt’s Patent / No. 328320” banner also prominent.  Several views of the rolled-scene cylinder panels are pictured.

This Colt has very distinct matching serial numbers on barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, arbor pin, rammer, and wedge.  Above or below the serial numbers on barrel, frame, trigger guard, and backstrap is the letter “E”, which designated this gun for special polishing and engraving

The engraving work is stunning, with deeply cut scrolls on the frame, barrel, rammer, and backstrap.  The recoil shield and some frame bordering received special treatment, as did the trigger guard.  A detailed wolf’s head is engraved on both sides of the hammer.  Distinctive skip-cut bordering around the one-line address highlights that feature, and also decorates the end of the barrel.

The entire revolver was silver plated, of which 99% remains, with tarnishing evident near the muzzle, backstrap, and other areas.

The one-piece select burl walnut grips are exceptionally beautiful.  They were apparently finished with many coats of hand-rubbed varnish to yield high gloss surfaces.  The grips fit the brass straps perfectly, and show no signs of shrinkage or abuse.

The bore in this 31 caliber Colt has strong lands and grooves that are shiny, with only the slightest scattered porosity being evenly distributed.  The barrel has its original pin-type front sight, with the normal sighting groove on the hammer.  The cylinder nipples are nice and undamaged, as are the six safety pins as shown in the pictures.  The gun cocks and locks up tightly as would be expected, with perfect timing on the cylinder locking bolt.  The rammer assembly functions and latches crisply under the barrel.  The wedge fits tightly through the barrel and arbor pin slot, and there is no evidence of abusive damage to the barrel or wedge as commonly seen on percussion Colts.

Overall this is a beautiful engraved Colt percussion revolver!
