FRENCH Antique CHARLEVILLE Model 1822 Pistol
Military Conversion to Percussion
Here we present an antique Model 1822 Percussion Pistol, made circa 1822 at the armory at Charleville. It was built for military use and features a huge .70 caliber bore. It began life as a flintlock, but was soon updated to the new standard of percussion, a much more reliable system.
The lock is marked “M R/de Charleville”. The top of the barrel is marked “1822 t”. The left side of the barrel is marked “435”, which matches the left side of the stock. Under the number on the stock is “VENIEN”. Spangled proof marks are found throughout.
The overall condition is very good. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is solid, with clear markings. The bore is clearly rifled and clean, but a bit rough toward the breech. The action is strong.
