*The one area Parker was at the head of the class was the engravers they employed. These engravers at the turn of the 19th century were the finest in the trade. Many collectors look for Parkers that were engraved by this select group of artisans. – Bud Stanley (Parker Expert)

This firearm is one of those BEST engraved guns from that exact era and the DH was/is the most popular of the higher grade Parkers.  Both sides are engraved with the Parker Pointer in an oval, with the maker’s name, PARKER BROS. in a banner, surrounded by scrolls. The underside of the receiver shows three quail and the balls of the fences are surrounded with detailed engraving patterns. This DHE is very tastefully engraved with a handsome finish and this firearm is in amazing condition for its age; the action is tight as new. The rib is inscribed: “PARKER BROS. MAKERS. MERIDEN, CONN. TITANIC STEEL”

The barrels retain 98% barrel blue, it has 95% case colors, the bores are excellent and remain bright & shiny.

The stock is a beautiful piece of feathered crotch fancy grain and matches the wide forearm well. It is sound fore & aft – and has been re-oiled and is at 95%, The checkering remains at 98%, It is cased in its original Parker leather case with accessories. A very nice Skeet Gun with "2" frame 12 bore Parker with 26" barrels.

The Parker Identification book shows this gun, ser. No. 108735, left Parker in 1902 as a "D" grade with 30" barrels and an English straght stock. Somewhere after Charles Davis invented the game of Skeet in the 1920s, Parker came out with their Skeet Gun configuration, which became quite trendy.  The owner of this gun, realizing it already had a beautiful straight-hand stock, then sent it back to Parker to be made into the new Skeet Gun configuration, re-case colored and stock re-oiled. It was fitted with new 26” ejector barrels marked SKEET and SKEET, with two ivory beads, with a beavertail forend, and a checkered butt, all features consistent with their Skeet gun configuration. The finished product was cased by Parker.  The straighthand grip stock, original to it in 1902, is still in very high condition. After the re-work, this configuration is exactly like the post-1925 Skeet guns with the exception of the double triggers.

About Parker
Going back to 1868, Parker is one of the oldest shotgun makers in the US with their high quality production lasting until 1933, when they sold to Remington.  When Remington closed the Parker manufacture in 1942, Parker production ended until the 1980’s when the reproductions hit the market.  But their early history of manufacturing quality side-by-sides had given them a big head-start over other makers, and with reason: Parker shotguns were extremely reliable and the Company took pride in delivering and maintaining the quality of all grades of their side-by-side.

This early head-start had allowed them to capture some of the finest engravers, actioners, and machinists on this side of the Atlantic. Their moniker, referring to their gun as “The Old Reliable” attests to the market position they wanted to create for their gun as durable and dependable. Even today, nearly a century later, their guns are usually mechanically sound. Sherman Bell wrote an article for Double Gun Journal wherein he demonstrated that even old and abused Parker shotguns, when subjected to heavy overloads, held up to his pressure tests.

According to authors of Gamefield Classics by Michael MacIntosh and Bill Headrick in their chapter entitled “Parker Pride”, they wrote:
“Already at the pinnacle of the American trade, Parker Bros. owned a splendid reputation for quality…”

The DHE grade shows enough of that “best American engraving that Parker engravers were known for making this double a perfect example for a fine Parker double for any collection. For this grade, the 37th Edition Blue Book shows $10,000 without ejectors, add 25%-30% for ejectors, or $12,500 and it states about the DH…”the most popular higher grade gun, very tastefully engraved and flawlessly finished, approx. 9400 mfg.” There should be an add-on for one with an original Parker case.
