Description:
According to Flayderman's Guide To Antique American Firearms, this is a "Type II Model #3" variation of the Remington Arms Co. Double Derringer.  This variation was manufactured from 1888 to 1911.  It has a solid uncracked barrel hinge (cracked hinges are common on this model), and has 90% of the original nickel finish it left the Remington factory with.  While the original grips are slightly faded on one side from sunlight exposure, they are in exellent condition overall and completely free from cracks, dents, or repairs.  The bores are not as nice as the exterior condition of this derringer, which is very common due to the corrosive ammo used at the time of manufacture and for years afterward.  The rifling is still pretty strong and the pitted areas are in scattered patches, with the remainder of the bores pretty bright.  You can see better what I have described by enlarging the picture provided of the bores.  Mechanically this Remington Double Derringer is perfect.  It locks up properly and everything works 100% like it did when it left the factory.  The mainspring is still stout, and the hammer locks up perfectly in both the safety position and full cock.  The switching mechanism that moves the firing pin from the top to the bottom position (and vice cersa) on the hammer works perfectly each time it is cocked, and the trigger breaks cleanly to fire it.  The Remington over and under style Double Derringer was made for nearly 70 years, and is considered by most to be America's iconic cartridge derringer.  An example of this classic self defense weapon should be in every antique American firearms collection to be considered complete.
