Description:
Original US Krag Carbine dated 1895. This is an excellent high condition example of the earliest Krag carbines issued to the US Cavalry.Production of US Krag carbines began in 1895. The US Cavalry were most anxious to acquire the new Krag carbine though the ordnance department had not finalized the 'model'. Consequently the first issue carbines were dated 1895 and did bear 'MODEL' markings. This situation still prevailed in fiscal year 1896 and another batch of carbines were produced dated 1896. Later in 1896 the ordnance dept., satisfied with the issued carbines, began official production of the fully marked 'Model 1896' carbine. William Brophy's book on the US Krag states one carbine was produced for every five rifles. Therefore carbines were only 1/5 the general production of Model 1896 US Krags. This indicates why early US Krag carbines are scarce. For additional information on the early 1895 Krag carbine please see thesite of the Springfield Armory Museum Collection  ://ww2.rediscov/spring/VFPCGI.exe?IDCFile=/spring/DETAILS.IDC,SPECIFIC=10551,DATABASE=objects.
The early dated 1895 Krag carbines saw hard usage before and During the Spanish American War and are quite scarce in general. It is interesting to note that the carbine pictured & described here is close in serial number to the 1895 carbines issued to Theodore Roosevelt's 'Rough Riders'. Very few early Krag carbines, especially those dated 1895, are when found, in anything other than well used/ arsenal modified condition with little or no finish. When Springfield Krags became available on the US surplus market, before and after WW-I, the carbine models were especially popular since they made fine hunting arms without any modification and most of them saw continued hard use resulting in a relatively low rate of Krag carbine survival in general.
Condition: This particular 1895 Krag carbine is in excellent original condition. the barrerl retains 95% original blued finish with some light handling marks. The bore is crisp and shiny with some very light frosting (it should benefit from proper cleaning). Mechanical function is excellent. The frame and loading gate retain 95% original dull mottled casehardening. The bolt retains nearly all its original polished steel natural finish. The extractor retains 95% original 'fire blue', and the cocking knob/safely/ magazine cutoff nearly all their original finish. The proper 1895/6 carbine sight (marked 'C') and front stock band retain 95% original blued finish. The trigger guard retains 80% original blued finish with some wear on the bottom of the bow, and even the buttplate retains 75% original blued finish. The original walnut stock is excellent and the original saddle ring and bar retain their original natural steel finish. The stock has very appealing 'tiger stripe' grain. The stock also has good inspector marks and retains 95% original finish with some light handling marks. The original 3-piece cleaning rod is in the early type butt compartment without provision for an oiler. This carbine has one non-armory feature - someone attached a brass 'bead' to the top of its original front sight blade.
This Krag 1895 is an exceptional excellent example of the earliest Krag carbines issued to the US Cavalry. It is in similar condition to the example in the Springfield Armory Museum and would be very difficult to improve upon.
