Description:

Antique British BSA MK II Peabody-Martini-Henry

Marked for the Indian Depot at Poona, Dated 1877

Here we present an antique British Birmingham Small Arms Co. & Martini Company MK II Martini-Henry Single Shot Military Rifle, made in 1877. The first iteration of the rifle came about in 1871 and was adopted by the British Army to replace the Enfield Snider Breech Loading Rifles that were being phased out. The action is based on the patent by American and Boston native Henry O. Peabody, which was improved by Swiss inventor Friedrich von Martini. The new polygonal barrel rifling was the design of Scotsman Alexander Henry. This is where the rifle derives its name.

Like other British weapons, the Peabody-Martini-Henry saw action all over the world, and most famously in the Zulu Wars in Africa. Amazingly, the rifle was still in use during World War I, primarily as a reserve weapon and among Native Auxiliary troops, but there are some reports of air crews using incendiary ammo to attack observation balloons.

This example features many markings giving clues to its service life. The clearest indicators on this rifle note that it was made by BSA & M Co. in 1877, and that it was issued to the Poona Depot in British India. During this period of British rule, Poona was a particular hotbed of resistance against the colonial power. Various other markings are found throughout the rifle on the stock, receiver and barrel.

Overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear a uniform patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is solid, smooth, but with signs of use and a bit absent from behind the receiver. The butt plate is absent. The bore is smooth and shiny. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33 inches in length.
