Description:
An exceptional 'Gewehr 1888' infantry rifle by 'LOEWE, BERLIN', dated 1891.

The 'Gewehr 1888' was the first smokeless powder high velocity rifle adopted by the German military. It was designed by a commission of German officers and incorporated features of both Mauser and Mannlicher designs. This rifle came into being as a countermeasure to the French Model 1886 Military rifle. The 'Gewehr 1888' was originally made for the 7.92mm military cartridge using a round nose bullet with bore diameter of .318". In 1905 the German Army adopted the Spitzer type bullet using a .323" bore for the recently adopted Mauser Model 1898 rifle, 'Gewehr 1898', and many Model 1888 rifles were adapted for it though they were being replaced in German military service by the Model 1898. Large numbers of 'Gewehr 1888' rifles were sold to Turkey, China, and other countries. The 'Gewehr 1888' was used in many wars and revolutions around the world from 1888 to the Korean War of 1950.

For a full history of the 'Gewehr 1888' and a list of all the conflicts throughout the world it was involved in - which is amazing - please google  wikiwand gewehr 1888.

Because of its worldwide heavy usage in all sorts of conflicts and environments very few 'Gewehr 1888' rifles have survived in anything other than fair to awful condition. This exceptional 'Loewe, Berlin, 1891, Gewehr 1888' standard issue infantry rifle is in excellent original condition.

Condition: The barrel jacket, magazine/triggerguard, and barrel bands retain 98% original blue finish. The scarce detatchable sling swivel retains 98% blue finish. The rarely seen detatchable magazine bottom clip cover retains 98% blue finish. The buttplate retains 60%+ blue finish. The receiver, bolt, cleaning rod, rear sight leaf, and bbl.band retainer spring retain their original arsenal polish natural steel finish with very light patina. The bore and mechanical functions are excellent - the bolt face shows this rifle has had little or no use.The rear bbl. band bears a regiment mark, ".33.R.11.42". All markings are crisp as new. The excellent walnut stock features lovely tiger stripe grain, original color / surface, and crisp inspector's marks. There is some very light handling wear and a small stain on the left upper edge of the forestock behind the front band.

This is an exceptional example of an original 'Gewehr 1888' infantry rifle which would be very hard to equal or upgrade. This rifle has been in a private collection for over thirty years.
