The Colt 1848 Baby Dragoon Type II was a scaled down version of the .44 caliber Dragoons and were fitted with either a 3, 4, 5 or 6 inch octagon barrel without a loading lever, square-back trigger guard, had a Texas Ranger and Indian scene roll engraved on the 5-shot cylinder, and were made from 1847 to 1849 in the serial range 151 to 11,600. This 1849 vintage Baby Dragoon is as described and is fitted with a 6 inch barrel and is factory engraved. Numbered in the 8000 serial range, this 6 inch factory engraved gun is done in the early vine scroll style. It is one of the first to show factory marks for engraved guns. Notice the punch dots in front of the serial number on the barrel and frame. Most of these early engraved Baby's had coverage on the frame, but none on the barrel and backstrap. This one has both, and might even be considered an early example of the Exhibition style. Notice the hammer, the end of the barrel and the bottom of the trigger guard and butt. All numbers match, the cylinder retains a light Dragoon and Indian fighting scene, and the brass guard and backstrap show 60-70% of the original silver plate. This is a very nice example of its type.
